Cherokee Hills Byway
The Cherokee Hills Byway takes you through the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. Along the byway, you will discover the beauty that lies in northeastern Oklahoma. You will discover the heritage and history of the Cherokee people as you visit Tahlequah, the capital city of two tribes -- The Cherokee Nation and United Keetoowah Band. Take time to stop and enjoy Lake Tenkiller where numerous marinas, state parks and U.S. Corps of Engineers campgrounds abound with recreational opportunities.
The Scenic upper Illinois River above Tahlequah offers leisurely canoe or raft trips. The lower Illinois River below Tenkiller dam boasts year round trout fishing at Marval Resort and has given the Gore Chamber of Commerce the right to lay claim to the title of "Trout Capital of Oklahoma." No matter what you are looking for, whether it is Cherokee culture and heritage, recreational activities, natural scenic beauty or small-town America...Cherokee Hills Byway will take you there.
